Description: The monastery and the College Emiliani were founded in 1822 by the archpriest of Fognano Don Giacomo Ciani, Mother Rosa Brenti, and Giuseppe Maria Emiliani, nobleman and Florentine literary man, who financed the work. The goal of the institution, which follows the rules of San Domenico, is the education of young girls. From 1840 to today, girls from the best families in Italy have studied here. It seems that at one time it was also host to the daughter of the great English poet Byron and the noblewoman Teresa Gamba. This institute was a favourite of Pope Pio IX who solemnly visited it in June of 1857 on the occasion of one of his trips across the Romagna region. The building which occupies a surface of thirteen thousand square meters was constructedfrom the design of the architect Pietro Tomba (from Faenza) and finished in 1832. The adjoining church is in the Latin Cross form in the Corinthian style. In the alcoves along the nave there are chalk statues of the institute’s patron saints. Above thealtar on the right there is a painting representing the Madonna who has the founder and patron Emiliani at her feet. The painting is the work of Gaspare Mattioli who is from Faenza.
