Address: Corso Matteotti

Description: Inside the church of San Giovanni Battista consecrated in 1960 in the apse behind the high altar is one of the most important sacred works that the extroverted modern artist created. The “Redemption” by Sante Ghinassi is a giant ceramic panel 100 square meters made up of 900 majolica tiles. The work by Ghinassi refers to the mystery of the saviour: around the crucified Christ from the lower left and in a clockwise direction there is the history of Christology, from the Nativity to Evangelisation, passing from Baptism, the calling of Peter, the handing over of the keys, the Resurrection and the Pentecost. Just like a moviola at the foot of the cross there are characteristic and emblematic glances of Riolo: the Thermal Springs, the Rocca, and the town surrounded by its walls.

Additional notes: Also to be found in the church are a number of other works including the “Via Crucis” by Angelo Biancini. Some paintings from the old church which probably date back to the XV and XVI centuries are in the little chapel dedicated to Beata Vergine del Rosario.

Directions: The Church is in the village main street Corso Matteotti and is easy to find.
