Description: This is a testimonial of medieval Faenza, even though the church has been modified and impoverished. The church of San Giacomo della Penna was built between the 12th and 13th century at the same time as San Bartolomeo (today a war memorial) and San Lazzaro, for which it is similar to in volume and construction details. The church was suppressed in the Napoleonic era at the end of the 1700’s, the church was privatised and destined for other uses. The building then passed the hands of three different owners after which the last wretched restructuring works deeply altered the whole building, conserving only part of the façade with two pilaster strips and the dentil decorated cornice of the lower eaves. Some remains of the ancient Romanesque portal can be seen with the gracious cornice made of diamond shaped tesserae in white marble.

Directions: The church is no longer a place of worship and cannot be entered. To see its exterior, you can reach Piazza della Penna from Piazza del Popolo and head west for via Severoli, then left into via Castellani for less than 100 m. Turn right into the first street that goes along the left side of the ex church and leads to the small piazza.
