Explaination: The church of Campiano is the oldest Christian church in Castel Bolognese. A document dating back to 854 mentions the church as Pieve di Sant’Angelo in Campiano, located on a hillock on which there was once a pagan temple. From 1374 the name Pieve di Sant’Angelo disappeared from the documents to be replaced with the name Pieve di San Michele, still today the patron saint of the church. In the 17th century, the name Pieve also disappeared. The church, initially Romanesque style but restored in 1582, was 20 m long and 6 m wide, is spacious with two doors and internally built with beams (subsequently transformed into vaults). The façade was painted red and decorated with the image of the patron saint in 1599. It had three altars, the main altar with two side altars, demolished in 1599 and rebuilt in the mid 1600’s. The apse was restored in 1612, whilst important interventions were made in 1688 after an earthquake, in 1760, 1781 and again in 1885. The church had a bell gable. Destroyed during the second world war, the church was rebuilt in a different position in the 1950’s. At the base of the façade there are three arches that act as an entrance portico, whilst the at the centre of the gable, there is a round window that gives light to the inside of the church. The parish works are on the left.
