Description: The Parco Naturale Carne was opened in 1973 on an initiative of the region of Ravenna and cities of Faenza and Brisighella. The park’s nucleus, about 40 hectares, represents a concentration of all the most characteristic geological aspects of the Vena del Gesso. You can in fact observe superficial karst phenomenon (dolines, erosion, draining bubbles), as well as subterranean phenomenon such as sink holes, karst springs, wells. You can reach the Ca Carne, visitor centre and guest rooms, thanks to a rural carriage road that goes down through vast dolines, the one on the left is very wide and grassy, while the one on the right is more wild and hidden by thick vegetation. Other dolines worth mentioning are the “Catino di Pilato ”at the foot of Monte Rontana, the twin dolines in the Abisso Faenza and the little doline called “Dolina del Gufo” (the doline of the owl). The park represents a well conserved example of the flowers and vegetation of the Vena del Gesso. Among the arboreal species present are maples, the domestic service tree, the wild service tree, the wild cherry tree, chestnut trees, elms, and the adriatic oak. You will also find wild lime wood and ash. In the spring you will see species such as the dog’s tooth violet and orchids and ferns in humid areas. The park is populated by various fauna such as the garden mouse, hedgehogs, squirrels, dormouse, fox, skunks and porcupines. You can also find roe deer and boars. There are also various species of bats. Among the birds worth mentioning are the green woodpecker, the hoopoe, and the extremely rare and colourful roller. In the park nest also owls, sparrow hawks, and buzzards.
