The Regional Park “Vena del Gesso” was estabilished by the Regional law 21 February 2005 n.10 and represents the most interesting site of the Appennines in the Province of Ravenna and is important for the development of the entire hilly area as well as for the preservation of the natural heritage.
The Vena del Gesso is a gypsy-sulphurous formation that along several Karst phenomena run in diretion northeast-southwest from the Provincial border to Brisighella. The gypsy formation (Miocene period), is situated in the high hilly area, with spectacular gypsy cliffs oriented towards south, such as the Riva di San Biagio and the Monte Mauro and Monte della Volpe cliffs. Important karstic phenomenon interest the Gypsum Vein area, from a vaste system of caves (Tanaccia cave, Den of King Tiberius), dolines, abysses (Fantini and Mornig abysses) and streems (rio Gambellaro, rio Stella). The area is crossed by four Appennine streams, Santerno, Senio, Sintria, Lamone. There’s a great diversity of vegetation: in the south side we find plants which grow in warm or dry places with typical Mediterranean features, rocky cliffs alternted with scrubland. In the North side with shadey slopes you can find plants that normally grow higher altitudes, chestnut groves, woodland with a humid environment.
The Carnè Park (within the Gypsum Vein area) was estabilished more than 30 years ago and is managed by the Municipalities of Brisighella, Faenza and the Province of Ravenna.
Directions: The enormous chalky outcropping of the Vena del Gesso, about 20 km. long, goes from Brisighella to Borgo Tossignano in the area of Bologna.
