Domenico Baccarini was born in Faenza on 16th December 1882. He attended the Arts and Crafts School directed by the painter Antonio Berti, under whose guidance he perfected his drawing technique.
Awarded a study grant, he moved to Florence in 1901 to take courses at the Fine Arts Academy. Around autumn 1903 he went to Rome where he did illustrations for the newspaper La Patria which also organised an exhibition of his work at its headquarters (June-July 1904).
Returning to Faenza he set to work making models for the Fratelli Minardi majolica factory as well as creating plastic pieces and drawings, some of which were shown at the 1905 Venice Biennale.
1905-1906 were also the years of his great friendship with the writer Antonio Beltramelli whose short stories inspired many of his drawings.
He died in Faenza on 31st January 1907.
Additional Notes:
Though essentially a drawing and plastic artist, Domenico Baccarini was curious about all techniques: as well as tackling oil and pastel painting he tried woodcut, etching and lithography. His works often feature the figures of his mother and grandmother. A large part of his oeuvre is in the Faenza Municipal Picture Gallery, while there are two terracottas in the Picture Gallery at the Ravenna Fine Arts Academy. One of his drawings – The Cross in a Sown Field – is in the Gallery of Modern Art, Rome.
